Description

The Maine Legislature issued a proclamation honoring Samantha Smith, 10, of Manchester, calling her "Maine's foreign diplomat."

The proclamation noted that Smith's letter to Soviet Union leader Yuri Andropov had been published in the Communist Party newspaper Pravda and had received national attention. She had asked him his intentions about war and had advocated for peace.

Several months later, Smith and her parents, Arthur and Jane Smith, traveled to the Soviet Union as Andropov's guests.
